Every tube of hardener that ships with an auto body filler kit is benzoyl peroxide. It's the initiator that turns soft polyester putty into a rigid, sandable surface — and getting the grade and dose right determines whether the repair holds or fails.
Automotive body fillers, fibreglass layups, and polyester gelcoats all share the same curing chemistry: an unsaturated polyester resin cross-links when exposed to free radicals from a peroxide initiator. In the automotive aftermarket, the peroxide of choice is benzoyl peroxide 50% paste — supplied as the small tube of "hardener" or "cream" that the technician squeezes into the filler before spreading it on the panel.
Why paste, not powder?
Body fillers and polyester resins are liquid or semi-liquid systems. Mixing a dry powder into a viscous paste creates dust, clumping, and uneven distribution — all of which produce hot spots (over-cured) and soft spots (under-cured) in the finished repair. A thixotropic paste eliminates these problems:
- › No dust — safer for the workshop, no airborne peroxide particles.
- › Pre-dispersed — mixes evenly into the resin in seconds with a spatula.
- › Consistent dosing — a 2–3% ribbon by weight is easy to estimate visually and by feel.
The curing chemistry
When BPO meets the amine accelerator already dissolved in the polyester resin, a redox reaction breaks the peroxide's O–O bond at room temperature, releasing free radicals. Those radicals attack the styrene and polyester double bonds, cross-linking the resin into a rigid thermoset. The result:
- › Gel time of minutes — the filler goes from workable to firm quickly enough for production throughput.
- › Full cure within an hour — the panel can be sanded, primed and painted in a single shift.
- › No external heat needed — ideal for workshops without ovens.
Dosing: the difference between a good repair and a callback
Automotive technicians learn quickly that dose governs everything:

Beyond auto body: composite and FRP manufacturing
The same BPO 50% paste that cures a body filler also initiates curing in fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) layups — boat hulls, tanks, pipes, architectural cladding and industrial linings.
