Why MMA Cold Plastic Markings Dominate Modern Highways
Road markings designed for durable service under demanding traffic conditions are cured on the road itself, and benzoyl peroxide is the component that sets them. Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) cold plastic coatings offer superior abrasion resistance, high reflectivity, and rapid return to service compared to conventional thermoplastic or solvent based paints.
1. The Ambient Redox Cure System
Unlike hot applied thermoplastics, MMA cold plastics cure chemically on the road surface. Because the resin carries an accelerator, this Redox system uses without external heating, although ambient temperature still has a major effect on pot life and cure speed.
- Component A (Resin Base): Contains methyl methacrylate monomers, pigments, fillers, and a tertiary amine accelerator.
- Component B (Initiator / Hardener): Contains Benzoyl Peroxide (typically BPO 50% powder or paste), dosed at 1% to 4% by weight depending on ambient temperatures.
2. Powder vs. Paste in Road Marking Application Equipment
Road marking contractors use different application systems depending on project scale and machinery:
- 50% Free Flowing Powder: Widely used in manual trowel application and screed boxes. The powder is pre mixed into Component A immediately prior to application, or delivered via automated screw dispensers.
- 50% Paste / Dispersion: Preferred for automated 1:1 or 98:2 airless spray rigs. Liquid/paste BPO ensures instantaneous inline static mixing without dry powder dust or nozzle clogging.
3. Managing Ambient Temperature Effects
While external heat is unnecessary, road surface temperatures directly impact reaction kinetics:

Contractor Guidance: Never reduce BPO dosage below 1.0% by weight, as under initiation can result in soft, un-cured road marking surfaces that degrade under traffic.
